Book 25 of 2102 - Insurgent by Veronica Roth

I feel like I just shotgunned this book. I started it this morning and just finished it and am feeling spent. I liked Insurgent for the same reasons I liked Divergent - it’s a tightly written series with characters that behave consistently, while still growing. It’s a great read and I can’t wait for the final book to come out.

Insurgent carries on where Divergent left off, continuing the story of Tris and Four. After the focus on Abegnation and Dauntless in the first book, in Insurgent, the reader is given a glimpse of the other 3 factions, Candor - the honest, Erudite - the learned, and Amity - the kind. The thesis of the series, that these traits balance each other and that you can be defined by multiple characteristics, becomes more clear as the reader becomes more familiar with each faction.

As far as second books in a trilogy are concerned, this one is particularly well done. The plot moves forward rather than moving backwards, then forwards and winding up where the first book left off. Until the last book comes out, I can’t be sure, but Insurgent felt like a necessary addition to the plot of the overall series.

I would highly recommend this series to anyone who likes to read young adult fiction. While this won’t likely become a literary classic, its a great addition to the growing body of young adult fiction that focuses on potential dystopic futures.
